A set of experiments was conducted to ascertain the potential effects of melatonin on vital parameters, hematological parameters, some biochemical parameters, and cortisol in Arabian stallions subjected to a 4000 m race. Twelve apparently healthy stallions of the Arabian breed with a mean body weight of 354.8 ± 6.88 kg and a mean age of 4.7 ± 0.74 years were used for the study. The respiratory rates were found to be significantly higher (p < .05) in the melatonin group compared to the values obtained in the untreated group. The counts of band cells were found to be significantly higher (p < .05) in the untreated group compared to the treated group post-exercise, substantiating the antioxidant effects of melatonin. The concentration of the hormone cortisol was recorded to be significantly higher (p < .05) post-exercise in the untreated group compared to the value obtained in the treated group. The results obtained indicate that melatonin had an ameliorative effect against exercise-induced stress in the stallions studied.
